Project Moth
After many years away from skiff and dinghy sailing, I decided to join the foiling International Moth class to race between radio sailing commitments. From jumping in on a minimal budget in 2017, I aim to document the process of changes, modifications and results using an older Bladerider design as my starting point. Enjoy…

Entry level Moth Setup
Since a shift to foiled flight in the mid 2000s, design and quality of foiling systems have continuously improved and simplified. The result has seen Moth class racing become far more accessible, reliable and enjoyable than ever before.
Of course the best of design benefits naturally come with the latest commercial designs, but the good news is that skippers looking to get started at the ‘entry’ level of Moth foiling can benefit also. Now more than anytime before, there are numbers of quality older designs available. These, with a good total setup and careful general maintenance can offer the perfect way into the class at a budget that suits most dinghy sailors.
Having gone through the process of upgrades from an early era commercial foiler to applying modern used systems and approaches to my own boat, I welcome anyone looking to do similar to get in touch.
Whether it be sorting a wand system, checking over your foil angles for safe easier flight or setting up your rig to get the best from it, all of these and more can make the difference between an enjoyable or horrible entry into the class. I am happy to assist with advice and also manually should you be in need.
Feel free to get in touch by email at bgrcyachting’at’hotmail.com to see if I can help you enjoy your entry into moth foiling.
